Defending state 1,600-meter champion Annie St. Geme of Corona del Mar and Shannon Murakami of Saugus are the top local runners in the girls' mile, which is scheduled for 5:43 p.m. Saturday. They will face major challenges from Marie Lawrence of Reno, who defeated St. Geme last year, and Alex Kosinski of El Dorado Hills Oak Ridge, the state 1,600 runner-up last year.

Another top event is the boys' 100 meters, where Jamere Holland of Woodland Hills Taft and Rodney Glass of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame renew their sprinting rivalry.

An out-of-state athlete to watch is Brittany Jones of Deerfield Beach (Fla.) who is the national leader this year in both the 200 and 400 meters and has the fourth-best 100. She is entered in the 200 and 400 this weekend.

The meet begins with the relays and developmental field events at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The open session begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m., and the Invitational events ? those with the majority of the elite athletes ? begin at 4 p.m.
