Easton senior Chanelle Price captured the 800 meters at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships held at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City.

Price won the event in 2:05.93, within a second of her best indoor time in the event, 2:04.96, a year ago in the PTFCA state championships at Penn State University. Phyllis Francis of Brooklyn was second on Sunday in 2:07.92. Price was the defending champ in Nike Indoors in Maryland, but decided to run the nationals this year in New York.

Abby Schaffer, another Easton senior, placed second in the pole vault in New York at 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Rachel Laurent of Houma, La., won the event with a 13-3 1/2 vault.

Two other local pole vaulters -- Kerry McDermott of Bethlehem Catholic and Brooke Hamscher of Whitehall -- placed in the top 20. McDermott tied for 11th at 11-5½ and Hamscher was 13th at the same height.

Other local competitors included junior Tevrin Brandon of Northampton, ninth in the 60-meter preliminaries in 6.96; senior Matthew Hamscher of Whitehall, 15th in the long jump at 21-8¼; and Easton senior Tenesia Simpson, 19th in the 60-meter semifinals in 7.84 and 25th in the 200 meters in 25.67.

Schaffer turned in a personal best of 13-2½ to place second in the pole vault Sunday at the Nike Indoor Nationals at Prince Georges Sports Complex outside Washington, D.C. Laurent won the event with a 13-8½ vault. Hamscher placed ninth in 11-9.
