Jill Smith wins mile at Nike Indoor Championships

Jill Smith capped her stellar indoor track and field season with another impressive victory Sunday afternoon.

The Southern Regional High School junior won the mile at the Nike Indoor National Championships in Landover, Md.

Smith won easily in 4 minutes, 53.68 seconds. Madeline Morgan from Mountain Brook, Ala., was second in 4:56.01.

Earlier this season, Smith won the mile at the Millrose Games and the Boston Indoor Games. She also won the 1,600-meter run at the New Jersey Meet of Champions.

In other Nike events Sunday, Chelsea Cox, a Southern Regional sophomore, finished third in the 800 meters in 2:12.42. Chelsey Sveinsson of Dallas, Texas, won in 2:11.52.

The Millville High School foursome of Brooke Kott, Nyrae Newman, Alyssa Barrow, and Britney Kott finished sixth in the 1,600 relay. The Thunderbolts ran 3:58.05. A team from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Maryland won in 3:46.43.

The same Millville foursome finished sixth in the sprint medley relay, running 4:11.04. Eleanor Roosevelt won again in 4:07.42.

The Pleasantville High School boys 4x400-meter relay team of Kenny Davis, Richard Gregory, Raymond Wilson and Jamal Roberts finished third in 3:24.0 to gain All America honors. The same four placed ninth on Saturday in the 800 relay in 1:32.24.

National Scholastic Indoor Championships

Oakcrest High School's Nijgia Snapp placed sixth in the girls 400 meters Sunday at the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships at the New York City Armory, and became an All American. Her time was 54.94 seconds.
