Emmaus girls place fourth at Nike Team cross country

The Emmaus High girls cross country team placed fourth at the Nike Team National Pre-Regional meet, held at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., on Saturday. The meet served as a course preview for the Nike Team National Northeast Regional meet, scheduled for Nov. 24. The regional will serve as a qualifier for the Nike Team National Meet, to be held Dec. 1 in Portland, Ore. The top two teams from the region will advance to the national meet.

Emmaus, running without one of its top six runners, placed fourth behind winner Voorhees of New Jersey, as well as two New York teams. New York actually has its own region, but the New Jersey school will be a competitor for Emmaus later this fall. Other state making up the Northeast Region include Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island. Emmaus was ranked fourth in the region this week. Voorhees wasn't ranked.

''We came up here, No. 1, to see the course, and No. 2, to have a good day,'' Emmaus coach Dan Wessner said. ''The girls' first word that comes to mind is exhausted. It's a tough course. They were comparing it to last year's state course [in Hershey] and said it was tougher.''

Emmaus had three medalists in sophomore triplets Amanda and Christina Faust, who finished 8th and 13th, respectively, and usual No. 1 Lindsey Graybill, a junior, (15th), who is healing from a fall during a run last week that resulted in stitches in her shin. Junior Melissa Meade finished 26th, just missing the medals. The Fausts' sister, Brianna, sat out because of a recent appendectomy, but is expected to return to competition within the next week or so.
