GREENSBORO, N.C. - Christina Fenske finished her high school career Saturday with a bang, and because of that, her coach, Allen Clifton, has a date at a tattoo parlor.
The Stuarts Draft graduate, who won the state Group AA high jump title, placed fourth in the event at the prestigious Nike Outdoor Nationals held at North Carolina A&T University.
Fenske cleared 5-feet-6 1/2 to earn the fourth-place spot. She almost cleared 5-feet-8 1/2 on her last jump, but her feet caught the bar. That mark would have given her second place. The winning height was 5-feet-8 1/2 with no misses.
I would have been happier with a higher place, but I still made All-American. That's a great way to end my high school career, Fenske said.
Clipping the bar on her last jump left her disappointed.
That would have been a personal best for me, which would have been great. But I still couldn't ask for anymore than be All-American, she said.
The disappointment of not getting a PR was quickly vanished by the fact that Clifton, Draft's track coach, now has to get a tattoo of a cricket.
Coach told me that if I made All-American (top 5), that he would get a cricket tattoo, Fenske said with unabashed glee in her voice. To see Coach getting a tattoo is pretty exciting. You can bet I'll be there. I might even videotape the whole thing.
Fenske was also able to display her form for her future coaches at High Point, where she will be attending in the fall.
I think they were pretty happy with my performance, she said.
