Bush Pasture Park

Salem, Or. 5K 9/29/07

The 33rd edition of the Charles Bowles Invitational was held by Willamette University at Bush Pasture Park in Salem & this year high school competition was added. Hermiston runners Jordan Ringe & Sammantha McLoud took advantage of the event by claiming individual titles, while leading their teams to victory.

The course was configured a bit differently than the Saxon Invitational held in the Park earlier this year but it still allowed fans ample opportunity to view the action. The course, no matter how it is configured, is a reasonably fast one & the girls started seemingly with the attitude of taking advantage of it. Chelsea McDonnell took a slight lead almost from the start but the story of the race was evident as Hermiston runners held 6 of the top 11 positions. The runners raced out of sight around the stadium &, when they returned, were led by the duo of Courtney Hochstetler & Chelsea Sinks of South Salem lus  McDonnell. They continued to battle for the early lead while behind them by about 20 meters came the phalanx of Hermiston runners led by McLoud plus Bethany Loumena of Central Catholic.

As the runners raced toward the east side of the park & then returned back to the start the race appeared to be between McDonnell & Hochstetler as they battled together & forged a 10 meter lead over Sinks, however just behind Sinks loomed McLoud. McLoud passed Sinks as she headed up the hill & took aim at the leaders. By the time she had reached the turn at the eastern side of the course she had caught the leaders. It did not take her long to push ahead while McDonnell struggled to remain close. Hochstetler in turn fell back to third place. There would be little change as they ran back up the hill to the southern part of the course beyond the stretching of the lead. With a smooth stride McLoud drew steadily away & went on to take a 9 second victory with a time of 19:25. McDonnell held on to finish 2nd but Leslie Macias of Hermiston made a big move to place 3rd ahead of Hochstetler. Kim Macias earned 5th ahead of team mate Shon i Schimmel. Maddie Morton of La Salle &  Chelsea Sinks placed 7th & 8th & Austin & Jessica Lundin of Heritage Faith rounded out the top ten.      In the girls team race Hermiston with four of the top six places defeated South Salem 28 to 58 while Kamath Union earned third.

Jordan Ringe took immediate charge of the boys individual race & opened up a 20 meter lead by the time that he had circled the stadium. He continued to glide along for the duration of the race to easily win in a fine time of 15:49. His winning margin of 25 seconds left the only question about the race: who would take second place? Terry Johnson & Antonio Gonzalez of Hermiston shared second during the early running but Alex Peterson of Klamath Union moved up during the middle stages & then drew away from Johnson to take second place. Hermiston took the team title by 10 points over Klamath, while La Salle was a distant third.

A nice aspect of the race was the chance to see former high school stars race as collegians. Isaac Stoutenbugh, a Footlocker finalist, placed 2nd for Oregon individually, while Jennifer Macias & Marsha Lampi placed well for Oregon State.
