Carryl breaks 33-year-old record in Knoxville
Knoxville, Tenn., - Raymona Carryl broke a 33-year-old record in the bantam girls division of the long jump on the third day of competition at the 2005 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Tom Black Track.
Carryl of Long Island, N.Y., leaped 4.78 meters/ 15 feet, 8.25 inches to win the bantam girls long jump crown. The 10-year-old bettered the 4.61m/15-1.50 mark set in 1972 by Joyce Bowie of Santa Barbara, Calif. I just tried to do my best and get out of the pit quickly, said Carryl.
Hanna Carson of Mesa/Chandler, Ariz., accomplished what she attempted to do, which was to set yet another midget girls record. The Mesa/Chandler, Ariz., native tossed 45.84m/150-5 to win the turbo javelin throw. I was very relaxed on my winning throw. I thought I had good form. said Carson. The 12-year-old Carson bettered the 38.12m/125-0 set in 2004 by Dee Dee Robinson of California. This is one of my favorite events, Carson continued.
Georgia Tech sophomore Jerome Miller cleared 2.10m/6-10.75 to win the high jump in the young mens division. I've been coming out and staying consistent at that (2.10m) height - especially all year round. I felt the pressure early on, but just stayed relaxed, said Miller.
Chia Hudson of West Chester, N.Y., came from behind to win the long jump in the intermediate girls division. The 15-year-old leaped 5.59m/18-4.25 to edge runner-up Victoria Dunlap (5.54m/18-2.25) of the T-Belles club. I was nervous since I was in fourth place, but I stayed focused. I just soaked everything in from my coach, Hudson said.
Desirae Gonder of Bakersfield, Calif., leaped 1.75m/5-8.75 to win the young womens division in the high jump, followed by Rachel Joiner who finished second (1.70m/5-7).
Joshua Kage of the Cornhusker Flyers tossed 41.43m/135-11 to win the discus throw in the youth boys division in a close competition against Kenneth Rowland (39.84m/130-8) of N-Motion Track Club who finished in second place.
