Butler wins three events in track and field
Old local rivals Jackie Coward and Danielle Sampley went at it one more time Thursday in the AAU Junior Olympic Games track and field meet at Tom Black Track.
Coward, about to enter her senior year at West High School, completed a sweep of the hurdles this week as she took the gold in the 100-meter event in 13.67 seconds.
She edged Sampley, a William Blount graduate, who was second in 13.85.
Meanwhile, Robert Griffin of Copperas Cove, Texas, also claimed his second hurdles title this week by winning the 110 in 13.46.
Coward and Griffin were well off AAU national records in the events.
Rising star Marjorie Butler of Knoxville won another gold by taking the 100 Youth hurdles in 14.51. It was Butler’s third gold medal of the session as she also scored firsts in the pentathlon and 200 hurdles.
Two national records were also broken Thursday.
Alexa Harmon-Thomas, running out of Lawrence, Kan., bested the national standard in the 80 hurdles Sub-Midget in 12.79.
Ramonte Jackson of Natchez, Miss., established an AAU record in the long jump for Sub-Bantam boys with a leap of 15 feet, 32 inches.
